Eleven Nigerian States have a high risk of exposure to the deadly virus, according to Nigeria COVID-19 Exposure Risk Profile. The states include Ebonyi, Ondo, Sokoto, Ekiti, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Kwara, Lagos, Kano, and Rivers.

Nigeria announced its coronavirus index case on February 27, 2020, when an Italian tested positive for the virus. Since then, it has recorded a total of 152,074 confirmed cases – from more than 1.5 million tests.

Apart from the increasing number of cases, over 129,000 people infected have recovered after treatment, while 1,862 deaths occurred as of February 22, 2021.

Last year, Lagos and Abuja were the epicentres of the deadly virus, with the highest infection rates, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) data.

Zamfara, Ogun, Osun, Kaduna, Enugu, Yobe, Sokoto, Oyo, Borno, Kebbi, and Taraba are the most vulnerable to health risks. They will have to travel for at least one hour to access either a primary or secondary facility.

Others include Niger, Lagos, Ondo, and Adamawa, scoring 2 points out of 4.0 on the risk index map.

Analysis of the risk index by States showed that Ebonyi has the highest risk index with 4.4 out of 5 in exposure to COVID-19. However, the remaining ten states have each a risk index ranging from 4.0 to 4.3.

Regarding the Nigeria COVID-19 Exposure Risk Profile, 10 States are prone to the socio-economic shock of COVID-19, highlighting low populations with limited options to cope with economic disasters. They include Jigawa, Zamfara, Yobe, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Katsina, Borno, Gombe, and Taraba.
