Declining State Allocation and the Need for Sustainability Plan

Disbursement data from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) between January and April 2020 has revealed the true state of Nigeria’s account in 2020. From the data sourced from the National Bureau of Statistics, total allocation declined by 9.63 percent between January and February. Between February and March, another 10.16 percent decline in total allocation was recorded. However, the total allocation appreciated by over 34 percent between March and April.

Only 3 States Generated More IGR Above Federal Allocation in 2019

Nigerian states’ journey to fiscal sustainability is still far ahead, 2019 Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Data by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown. According to the IGR report, all the thirty-six states and the FCT generated a total of ₦1.33 trillion. This amount represents about 50 percent of the federal allocation known as FAAC. The total FAAC shared to the states in 2019 stood at ₦2.5 trillion.

Despite Increasing Budgetary Allocation, Nigerian Prisons Remain in Squalor

The Federal government of Nigeria has appropriated over 613.5 billion naira (N613,462,338,602) to the Nigerian Correctional Service, formerly known as Nigerian Prisons Service, in the last ten years, a DATAPHYTE analysis has shown. In the same period, not less than N88.4 billion naira (N88,413,686,241) has been allocated for capital expenditure despite the fact that over 60 percent of the Nigerian prison population in the same period are pre-trial/remand prisoners. As a matter of fact, about 7 out of 10 inmates in prison today are awaiting trial persons. This is coupled with the increasing population of the prison every year as shown in the charts below.
