HIV/AIDS shows that it’s still a concern with 45,000 casualties as at last year. And Nigeria records the lowest GTI in almost a decade, despite an increasing spate in civilian-targeted terrorism. Sani Umar has 9 days to provide Faisal.

45,000 Deaths

With the health sector and public focusing on only COVID-19, HIV/AIDS has become a forgotten tale. According to the United Nations, at least 45,000 people living with HIV/AIDS died in 2019. And for Fiona Braka, UN representative, this was unacceptable, giving the availability of life-saving medication. During the press conference that heralded 2020 World AIDS Day, she further noted how the pandemic threatened covered ground.

39%

How is it that despite the daily report of violence and terrorism, there is supposedly a decline in terror related incidents? Hard to believe, right? Well, that is what the 2020 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) says. The death rate of terrorism declined to 1,245 (39% decline) in 2019; this made it the lowest in the country since 2011. This report stated that the reason for this decline was the reduction of crimes by Fulani extremists. However, this report recorded Nigeria as the third worst terrorism riddled country in the world for the sixth consecutive time. The top two countries on this list are Afghanistan and Iraq. The indenture further observed that there was an increase in terrorist activities targeted at civilians.

9 Days

Yesterday, the Federal High Court gave a nine-day ultimatum to Sani Umar Dangaladima to present ‘skip’, Faisal. Umar represents the Kaura-Namoda Federal Constituency of Zamfara State and pledged ₦60m. Now, he faces giving up the sum or arraignment, lest he produce Faisal. On the flip side, bail skipper Faisal son of Abdulrasheed Maina faces charges of money laundering and false declaration of assets. And following an EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) investigation, was put up for a ₦60m bail on November 26, 2019. One condition was providing a surety who must be a Nigerian member of the House of Representatives.
