Nigeria’s Internet Subscriptions Dropped by 27 million in 2021

According to the data provided by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), for the three quarters of the year 2021 (Q2, Q3, Q4 ), active internet subscribers in the country, dropped by 27 million in 2021.

According to the data provided by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), for the three quarters of the year 2021 (Q2, Q3, Q4 ), active internet subscribers in the country, dropped by 27 million in 2021.

The report revealed, a total of 140,175,169 subscribers were active on the internet in the second quarter of 2021, as against 143,636,816 subscribers in the second quarter of 2020, representing a 2.41 per cent year-on-year decrease in internet subscriptions.

Also, in the third quarter of 2021, a total of 140,275,459 subscribers were active on the internet which is lesser than the 151,512,122 subscribers it had in the third quarter of 2020. This represents a year-on-year decrease of 7.42 per cent. 

Likewise, in the fourth quarter, a total of 141,971,560 subscribers were active on the internet in 2021, as against 154,301,195 subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2020, representing a 7.99 percent decrease in internet subscriptions.

Subscription rate.

The data also revealed MTN had the highest number of subscribers. It had a total of 176.8 million subscribers followed by GLO with a total of 116.30 million, and Airtel had a total of  110.46 million subscribers.

Survey carried out by the NBS, in Q2, Q3 and Q4 respectively, shows that Lagos, Ogun and Kano state had the highest subscribers while Bayelsa and Ebonyi state had the least subscribers.
